Echoes
Words and Music by Lisa Locke, 2000
1. Sit down for a minute, I want to tell you a story
You will be a pool that I can see my reflection in
You will be a canyon; I’ll listen for the echo of my words
We all know about the tree that fell in the forest
Way out in the wilderness with not a soul around
I tell you that a thought that never is spoken
Slips away like that elusive sound
Chorus 1: I am the stories I tell about you
You are the stories you tell about me
The truth is in the echoes
And the spaces in between
2. When a poet climbs a mountain he gives fleeting senses form
And changes every climb and every mountain in our eyes
That brief cosmic second that was the poet climbing the mountain
Wasn’t the important thing by far
Why are we talking about poets anyway?
As if they were the only ones with anything worthwhile to say
Our words echo in each others’ throats, ring in each others’ minds
That’s how we know that we’re alive
Chorus 2: You are the stories I tell about you
I am the stories you tell about me
And the truth is in the echoes
And the spaces in between
